WWE Mayhem Review - Hit the ring and break some bones

We have all marveled at WWE champions all our childhood, and most never got over the obsession. For those of us who had our first email addresses on the name of Undertaker, a new WWE game is just what we needed in life.

WWE is a mix of choreographed reality shows and over-dramatic soap operas with a dash of wrestling. Reliance Games is pushing all the right buttons with WWE Mayhem. WWE Mayhem is a fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled arcade-style fighting game. The game has a massive amount of content for a free-to-play mobile game, let’s dive right into it.

In the game, you build your roster from veteran and present WWE legends and superstars. You’re given a set of two superstars when you enter the game. The superstars are ranked in one to five-star levels. One way to get a new superstar for your roster is to invest in the game to get superstars of your choice. In fact, the monetization is pretty compelling, you’d want to spend to get your dream rostrum ready instantly.

The other way however is the story battles. You get to choose your opponent, if you defeat them, they became a part of your roster. You can get a superstar you already have, and overdrive them. This way they are upgraded to increase their strength.

WWE Mayhem offers tag matches. It lets you switch between superstars from your collection. The game franchise also hosts live in-game events. Online pro players from all over the world compete with each other to win a title.

The game has easy controls that make your experience smooth and fluid. The basic controls are tap to throw light attacks, swipe to throw heavy attacks or dash back and forth, hold the screen to block, and fill up a 3-segment special meter to perform a variety of special moves with the tap of a button.

The right side of the interface is for attacks while the left is to defend. You have other superstars showing on the top corner which you can switch to during fights. The bottom left screen has all the special moves. A better approach is to drain the opponent of their hp by simple continuous attacks. Then pin them and make a massive special move. This way they would not have any energy to retaliate.

As you progress the AI becomes relentless. The excitement, the adrenaline rush, and the drive to upgrade your roster make it exceptionally enjoyable.

The Strengths of WWE Mayhem

The game is a standard arcade fight gameplay with some neat twists that jazz up the wrestling experience further. WWE Mayhem includes the signature moves of all its superstars. The game has a cool set of moves which is truly an impressive feature.

There exists a reverse attack move. It is just as it sounds, your opponent makes a move and you simply reverse it on them. Now that’s what we call backfire!

The most lit mode however is the no disqualification round. It is truly a cruel fun-filled mode where you can hit your opponent with absolutely anything. All the things that count as cheating or foul in the real matches are done here. The crowd throws chairs, tables, and whatnot at you and you can use that as a weapon.

The best feature of WWE Mayhem is the inclusion of literally all the wrestlers current or from the past. This keeps you hooked to the game for a long time. You always have a new superstar to score. And with new superstars being introduced every now and then, you would always be engaged.

The developers very smartly incorporate all real-life events of WWE into the game. This is probably why WWE Mayhem has maintained its popularity all these years. The graphics and animations are pretty dope. The superstars don’t look ridiculous up close like the rest of the WWE games, which is a major plus point.

The matches seem more realistic because of the fun, entertaining, and well,  the trademark dramatic WWE narration in the background.

The weaknesses of WWE Mayhem

WWE Mayhem lacks some of the key features that make other WWE games interesting. As it is an official WWE game, it should have all the music and theme licenses. But there are no entrance music or themes of the legendary superstars. Since WWE is all about drama and grandeur, this makes it quite lackluster.

The microtransactions are a bit unfair. By investing real money into the game, you can get deals and achieve a high-level superstar in almost no time. This gives beginner players a kick-start. If you’re not paying, you’d have to go through a painfully long and grinding play and might not reach up to a 5-star player even then. It heavily relies on microtransactions in order to keep yourself competitive or to make significant progress.

Suggested Improvements for WWE Mayhem

First and foremost, the developers should figure out a well-balanced monetization system by improving the chances of achieving a 5-star superstar without investing actual money.

If you’re short on gold, you can not even heal your superstar to take them to a new fight. The superstars take too long to regenerate after a match. The higher the rank of the superstar, the more time it requires to regenerate. Introducing a few bonus rounds to heal your wrestlers, would be interesting.

Adding the signature entrance music and also the winning music themes of at least the 4-star and 5-star players would spark the missing grandeur.

It is indeed easy to pick up and play, with basic touch controls and constant character maintenance via levelling. Along with that, the decent graphics with immersive gameplay make WWE Mayhem a wholesome game. Download and start playing now, you’re guaranteed to have a wonderful time.
